Crazy Dog Sungnaskinyan (c1832- ? ). Hunkpapa. Known also as Mad Dog. Name sometimes mistranslated as Crazy Horse (SRA1881e:5, 1883a, 1900b:301). Born Dec. 1832 in present South Dakota (SRA1900b) or c1835-36 (SRA1881a, 1885b). Married Pretty Camp c1856 (SRA1900). Presumably at LBH. Surrendered with Sitting Bull and Four Horns at Fort Buford and transferred to Standing Rock Agency, July 1881. Absent from village when Sitting Bull band (including Crazy Dog’s wife) was transferred to Fort Randall as prisoners of war, Sept 1881 (SRA1881e); joined wife at Fort Randall Oct. 10, 1881 and pursuant to letter of instructions from Dept. of Dakota Oct. 17, 1881, he was to be held and treated as member of Sitting Bull’s band (Fort Randall Post Returns); transferred to Standing Rock Agency with Sitting Bull May 1883 (1883b).
