There are many excellent websites devoted to or preserving information about American Tribes. We recommend the following:

Buechel Memorial Lakota Museum ~ The Virtual Exhibits of the Buechel Museum at the St. Francis Mission in Rosebud, South Dakota. Each virtual exhibit is designed to provide information on some aspect of Lakota culture.

Denver Public Library, Western History and Genealogy, Digital Image Collection ~ Over 120,000 of the images in the collection have been digitized and are available for viewing online in the Digital Image Catalog. The Digital Image Collection consists of prints and negatives that document the history of Colorado and the American West. This link will take you to the search page.

First People ~ Huge database of historical Native American photographs and texts (articles, treaties, poems, legends, etc.)

Frank's Realm ~ Frank lives in Finland and specializes in the Plains Indians and other "Characters of the Old West."

Lakota Language ~ Links to various Lakota/Dakota language resources (mainly texts).

Lakota Winter Counts: An Online Exhibit ~ The Smithsonian National Anthropological Archives' exhibit includes information about winter counts (timeline, author, overall view) and has a search feature.

Library of Congress ~ The online Prints and Photographs catalog of the Library of Congress. Many of the catalog records are accompanied by digital images, about one million digital images in all. Of special note is the Edward S. Curtis Collection.

Little Big Horn College ~ The Little Big Horn College's Apsalooke Writing Tribal Histories Project. Great resource about the Apsalooke (Crow) tribe past and present: history, culture and tradition.

LittleBighorn.info ~ The "Northern Plains Indians" section lists basic biographical information about the Indians present during the Battle of the Little Bighorn on June 25-26, 1876. Also see the "Northern Plains Indians" section of its Message Boards.

Oglala Lakota College Archives ~ The archives of the Oglala Lakota College: a collection of 1,600 photographs and 170 objects and pieces of artwork.

Old Pictures ~ Huge database of pictures of Native Americans (mostly by Edward S. Curtis). Be sure to look in the "Old West" section also.

Plenty Coups State Park ~ Rare historical photographs of the Apsalooke's last great chief.

Sicangu Heritage Center Collections ~ List of papers, records, and historical documents available at the Sicangu Heritage Center of Sinte Gleska University, Rosebud, South Dakota.

Smithsonian InstitutionResearch Information System (SIRIS) ~ The Smithsonian's library collections contain over 1.2 million volumes, including 15,000 journal titles, rare books and manuscripts. This link will take you to the search page.

Standing Rock Tourism ~ The Standing Rock Agency website offers an excellent history of the reservation as well as maps and photographs.
